3 Common Home Styling Mistakes + How to Fix Them

I’ve been an interior designer for 20 years and I’ve seen and heard it all. There are a few mistakes a see all the time when I come into peoples homes- but good news, they are easy to fix! Here are 3 home styling mistakes and miconceptions and how to fix them.

1.  Choosing rugs that are too small for your space

So often people use rugs in their room that are too small believing it will make the room feel bigger. In reality, it has the opposite effect and makes the room feel much smaller. The fix for this is so simple. When buying a rug, make sure it covers 75% of the space. Furniture should be able to sit all the way on top of the rug, not around the rug.

2. Relying only on light fixtures as the only light source

Lighting is so important in the overall aesthetic of a house. A lot of people will only rely on light fixtures for the main source of lighting. Light fixtures  should be used for ambience and aesthetics and don’t give you the lighting you need in a space. The fix: layer light fixtures with other lighting sources as well. Adding canned lighting and lamps along with your light fixtures adds depth to the room and provides the lighting you need.  In the example on the right, I layered wall sconces, a lamp next to the couch, and a ceiling light fixture behind the couch.

1. Pairing dark walls with dark furniture and flooring

People avoid painting their walls dark colors because they believe it makes the room smaller. When styled correctly, this is completely false! If you have walls that are painted a dark color and  style the room with dark furniture and dark flooring, the room will indeed feel smaller. The fix: Style dark colored walls with lighter flooring and furniture that offer contrast to the walls, the room will not feel smaller. In the example to the right, we paired a bright colored rug and white trim accents to contrast the dark walls and ceiling.
